About the Charlton L. Johnson Foundation, Inc.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization

Our Mission

Inspire and bring awareness to the importance of being a registered organ donor, and to save lives through the increased registration of organ donors.

Judith Charlton, Founder and Chair

I’m not only an advocate of organ donation, but also a living donor, a wife, the mother of two sons – the eldest of whom this foundation is named, and an AFK Kidney Health Coach.

The CLJ Foundation, Inc. (CLJFI) is the brainchild of my first son Charlton L. Johnson and I. Together we established the nonprofit after the epic success of our inaugural Masquerade Ball fundraiser for the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, in December of 2018, in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

My son, Charlton was born on June 17, 1986, in Queens, New York, and diagnosed at birth with Nephrotic Syndrome. A diagnosis of this nature meant his kidneys would progressively fail, and I was told my son was not expected to live past the age of four. Through the love, encouragement, and fighting spirits of myself and his dad, Marcus, and eventually his little brother, Marcel, Charlton lived to celebrate 33 years.

In August of 2019, Charlton unexpectedly passed away from complications from his twenty-first surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. Without Charlton by my side, I forged ahead with more determination than ever to make a difference in my son’s name and held the first CLJFI Support Group Meeting in October 2020.

Once COVID-19 hit, face-to-face meetings came to a halt and as the world turned virtual, so did the CLJFI. Monthly Support Group Meetings continue virtually every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6PM EST, and with the power of social media, CLJFI has welcomed participants from as far as New Zealand and Nigeria!

As an AKF Kidney Health Coach, I educate communities on kidney health and the risk factors of kidney disease. CLJFI through its power of influence has also brought in a representative of The National Kidney Foundation of Florida, to educate Broward County’s 7,000+ employees during health fairs that takes place several times a year.

With myself at the helm, CLJFI will continue to inspire more people to register to be organ donors on websites such as DonateLifeFlorida.org: Saving lives by giving those in need The Gift of Life.

For more information on CLJFI, its support group, educational workshops, or to participate as volunteer or Board Member, please email kidneywarrior617@gmail.com or call 954.203.1242. Donations to support our cause are welcomed via CLJF’s GoFundMe link, titled Charlton L Johnson Foundation.

The transplant journey can present challenging circumstances such as being a patient on the transplant waiting list and navigating post transplant medications and follow up clinic visits. Sharing your experiences with people who are going through, or who have already gone through those experiences, can be an effective way to cope with the stress associated with the transplantation process.
